Identification of environmental hotspots in fishmeal and fish oil production towards the optimization of energy-related processes

This study assessed the environmental impacts of a pelagic fishmeal and fish oil production plant in Iceland with life cycle assessment methodology. The focused on assessing effects different energy sources for utility due to high intensity production, as quality improved lower cooking temperature. hotspots three processing scenarios were assessed, where factory was run hydropower ( Scenario 0 ), heavy fuel 1 ) composition both 2 from cradle-to-factory gate. Midpoint results showed that raw material acquisition contributed most impact when operating hydropower. However, drying had highest used production. also demonstrated lowering temperature 90 85 °C, led simultaneously reduced during processing. indicated small adjustment can have an gain, demonstrating necessity optimize each step process increased product minimizing impacts.
